Abstract :
Salmonella typhi is a Gram Negative bacterium that causes typhoid fever. One of the plants that has antibacterial activity is jatropha leaves (Jatropha curcas L) which contain flavonoid compounds, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids. This study aims to determine the antibacterial effectiveness of Jatropha leaf extract (Jatropha curcas L) against the growth of salmonella typhi bacteria with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%. The method for extracting Jatropha leaves is maceration with 70% ethanol solvent and disc diffusion method, and comparing the average inhibition zones of each ethanol extract of Jatropha leaves (Jatropha curcas L) from 3 different concentrations, namely 25% concentration, 50% and 75%, and Ciproflaxacin as a positive control (+) and DMSO as a negative control (-). In addition, phytochemical tests were also carried out to determine the content of secondary metabolites contained in the ethanol extract of Jatropha leaves (Jatropha curcas L) Phytochemical test results of ethanol extract of Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L) leaves were identified as containing flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, and tannins. The results of the disc diffusion test of ethanol extract of Jatropha curcas L. were indicated by the diameter of the inhibition zone at a concentration of 25% at 8.25 mm, 50% concentration at 9 mm, and a concentration of 75% at 9 mm in the strong category. Based on these results, it can be seen that the higher the concentration used, the greater the diameter of the inhibition zone obtained.
